제2국민병의 소설화 양상에 대한 일고찰

Study on Novelization of the 2nd National-Soldiers

본 연구에서는 6.25 당시 세상을 떠들썩하게 했던 국민방위군 사건 및 제2국민병과 관련되는 내용을 다룬 소설의 양상을 고찰하였다. 관련 내용을 소설화한 텍스트는 흔하지 않지만 당세에 비판 여론과 관심이 매우 컸던 만큼 그 소설화 또한 상당한 의미가 있다. 연구 대상 텍스트는 김동리의 「귀환장정」(1951), 류재신의 「제2국민병」(1996), 신석상의 「신의 바람」(1986) 등 세 편이다. 「귀환장정」은 제2국민병의 병영 생활을 우회적으로 고발하기 위하여 극단적인 성격을 창조하고, 동료의 목숨을 살리지 않고 함께 골목으로 사라져 버린 의외의 결말을 제시함으로써, 전쟁 중에 일어난 상식을 초월하는 반인간적 폐단을 강력하게 암시하였다. 「제2국민병」은 제2국민병으로서 겪은 고통스러운 체험과 사실을 바탕으로 하면서도 넌픽션 소설로서의 문학성을 갖추고 있다. 주인물 ‘재신’이 국민방위군 생활을 마치고 귀경하여 가족을 다시 만나는 과정과 행방불명된 형을 그리는 꿈이 서두와 말미를 연결시키는 구성은 소설적 기교에 속한다. 「신의 바람」은 제2국민병의 소집, 귀향을 직접 다루면서 그 참상과 사회적 부조리를 뚜렷이 제기하고 방위군 사건의 책임 소재를 제기하는 등 날카로운 현실 비판을 제기한다. 비록 단편적이기는 하지만 소설 속이야기로 재창조해 내었다. 세 작품은 제2국민병을 다루면서도 이처럼 그 소설화 양상은 각기 다르다. 「귀환장정」은 사건 당시 소설화를 시도하였기에 병영 생활을 직접 다루는 대신 성격을 극단적으로 변화, 대조시키는 수법을 썼지만, 「제2국민병」은 40여 년 전에 겪었던 충격적인 체험을 되돌아볼 수 있는 여유를 가졌기에 수기가 아니라 넌픽션 소설로 그려 낼 수 있었다. 이에 비해 「신의 바람」은 6.25 전쟁 이후 30여 년이 흐른 시점에서 제2국민병이라는 제재를 본격적으로 소설화할 수 있는 가능성을 열어주는 것으로 볼 수 있다.

This studies on a novel that treated the National Defense Corps Scandal the contents related to the 2d national soldier flustering the world in Korean War on June 25. The text that novelized the mobilization and experience of the 2nd national soldier and the contents related to it is not common, but it had a big criticism that it would be significant to be novelized resulting in social reflection. The texts to study are three in Kim Dong Ri’s 「The strong young man coming home」, Ryu Jaeshin’s 「The second National-soldiers」, and Shin Seok Sang’s 「The God’s wish」. As its analytic result, 「The strong young man coming home」 takes an indirect criticism of the reality through extreme change of soldier’s character who returns from the military mobilization, while 「The second National-soldiers」 is a non-fiction novel that was composed by experience and fact. And, 「The God’s wish」 is recreating story fictionalizing certain part to present the sad situation of national soldiers and its related absurdity. I think a discovery of novel treating the mobilization of the second National-soldiers and in-depth study in the future.
