모녀 서사를 통해 본 ‘치매’의 상징성 연구

A Study on the Symbolism of Dementia in the Narrative of Mother and Daughter

본고는 치매에 걸린 어머니가 등장하는 모녀 서사에서 어머니의 치매가 궁극적으로 무엇을 은유화 하는지 고찰한 것이다. 논의의 대상 작품은 신경숙의 〈엄마를 부탁해〉, 박완서의 〈환각의 나비〉, 이혜경의 〈길 위의 집〉, 김인숙의 〈거울에 관한 이야기〉 등이다. 이 작품들에서 치매의 은유화는 ‘집’과 ‘거울’의 상징성을 중심으로 고찰될 수 있다. ‘집’은 어머니에게 가족 공동체를 살리는 공간이자 자신의 존재 가치가 가장 강하게 드러나는 공간이라는 의미를 지님과 동시에 기억이 모두 빠져 나간 그녀의 빈 육체를 상징한다. ‘거울’ 역시 치매의 대표적 상징으로서 자신이 누구이며 어떤 존재인지를 잊어 가는 망각의 과정을 보여 주는 도구라고 할 수 있다. 치매가 중심이 된 모녀 서사에서 ‘치매’는 어머니의 훼손된 주체성을 보여 주는 상징으로서의 의미를 지닌다. 그리고 치매에 걸린 어머니에 대한 반성의 서사가 진행됨으로써 딸은 과거의 어머니 세계를 복원하려는 노력을 보인다. 그러나 그 복원은 어머니의 정체성을 여전히 가부장적 질서에 고정시킨 상태에 머무는 것으로 그친다. 그러므로 본고는 ‘치매’를 중심에 둔 어머니와 딸의 서사에서 그들 간의 화해는 불완전한 화해로 끝맺고 있음을 지적하였다.

This study considers what the mother’s dementia means at the narrative of mother and daughter. The objects of study are Please Look Ajter Mom(엄마를 부탁해) by Shin Kyung-sook, Butterfly of Illusion(환각의 나비) by Park Wan-suh, A House on the Rood(길 위의 집) by Lee Hye-kyung, and A Story of Mirror(거울에 관한 이야기) by Kim In-suk, etc. At these works, the metaphor of dementia can be considered through the symbolism of home and mirror. The home is a place at which mother keep her family and show her identity, and it symbolize her body of loss of memory. Mirror, a typical symbol, also shows the process of losing and forgetting herself. The meaning of dementia is the symbolizing the destroyed identity of mother in the narrative of mother and daughter. And from the process of self-reflection, the daughter shows her efforts to recover the world of her mother. But the recovery ends up in the situation that the mother’s identity is fαed at the patriarcal order. So I pointed out that the reconciliation of the mother and daughter is imperfect in the narrative of mother and daughter.
