Reading Johnson’s Dictionary(1755) as a Standard English Monolingual Dictionary

Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary(1755), as one of the best works of the 18th century, gave the standard of reputable use that its century had cried out for, and remains a landmark in English lexicographical history, to which modem dictionaries owe some gratitude. Yet for all its acclaim, faults were found with its premodern conservative prescriptivism which his age sought desperately. This paper, through a reading of Johnson’s Dictionary in light of the 18th century zeitgeist, attempts an investigation of four intrinsically modem aspects of Johnson’s Dictionary and then makes a positive and constructive reassessment of it by the 18th century standards of language study.
