The Effect of First Year Experiences on Retention

대학 입문 경험이 학업 유지에 미치는 영향

학생들의 학업 중단은 재정적 손실, 졸업률 저하 및 학업에 대한 부정적 인식 등으로 인하여, 대학과 같은 고등교육기관이 직면하고 있고 해결해야 하는 도전적 이슈이다. 본 연구는 대학 신입생들이 새로운 환경에서 접하게 되는 여러 가지 경험들 가운데 학업 유지에 영향을 줄 수 있는 다양한 인식 요소들을 살펴보고, 대학 신입생들이 중도에 학업을 포기하지 않고 학습을 유지하는데 주요한 영향을 미치는 변인들을 규명하고자 연구가 수행되었다. 총 853명의 대학 신입생을 대상으로 로지스틱 회귀분석을 한 결과에 의하며, 3가지의 인식 요인들 즉, 학습 환경 분위기, 학업 경험, 협동학습 경험이 신입생들의 학업 유지에 상대적으로 큰 영향력을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 성인학습자가 새로운 학습 커뮤니티에서 신입생의 입장으로 겪는 다양한 경험들이 궁극적으로 학업 유지에 매우 중요한 영향력을 가진다는 점을 보여주며, 특히 학생과 교수자의 상호작용 및 협동학습의 경험이 학습유지를 위한 매우 중요한 요소인 것으로 드러났다. 본 연구의 결과는 신입 사원을 대상으로 하는 사내 오리엔테이션 프로그램의 개발에 있어서도 사원들의 지속성 있는 능력개발 및 유지를 위하여 고려되어야 할 점들을 제시해 준다.

Dropping out is one of the most challenging issues in higher education institutes because drop-out directly affects lower graduation rates, financial loss, and negative impressions of learning. This study explored the effect of the first year experiences on students’ retention aiming to investigate and sought to find out the influential factors that affect students’ retention rate based on six student perceptions in the first year of college life of 853 freshmen cohort. According to logistic regression analysis, the result showed three major perceptions(classroom climate, academic experience, and collaborative learning experience) of first year experiences, though it was not significant, had relatively high degree of influence over students’ retention. These findings indicate the first year of experiences in academic learning community are very critical requisite for students retention and quality interaction and collaborative working experience are important factor to decrease students’ drop-out. In addition, this result has the potential application to orientation program of new employees for positive experiences in workplace.
