The Effect of Response Papers on English Literature Education: Focusing on English Pre-service Teachers

This study aims to show how response papers can influence English literature education in the Department of English Education. There are two research questions in the present study: 1. What are the characteristics of English literature classes in the Department of English Education? 2. What is the effect of response papers on English literature education in the Department of English Education? To figure out these research questions, student questionnaires (with 206 and 64 students respectively according to the research questions), two professor interviews, classroom observations (two times respectively based upon the professor), and students’ actual response papers were analyzed. The results show that the method of simple reading is still employed in many English literature courses, whereas pre-service teachers want them to offer more detailed explanation of the text, the author, and the socio-cultural context. When response papers were implemented in the actual classroom, both pre-service teachers and professors were satisfied with them especially in terms of student’s active participation in class and deepening the understanding toward the culture as well as the text itself. The findings of this study are expected to improve the quality of English literature education in the Department of English Education in more practical way.
