Developing a rubric to evaluate Korean English pre-service teachers’ performance for teaching English in English: Testing reliability, validity, and quality of items

This study aimed to develop a rubric, which is theoretically validated and statistically tested, to assess Korean English pre-service teachers’ performance for Teaching English in English (TEE). Based on the previous studies related to TEE, confirming the content validity, a preliminary rubric was developed. Then, with the video-taped microteaching to demonstrate TEE of 59 participants in this study (pre-service teachers in a university in Seoul), a series of statistical analyses were conducted to test the reliability (internal consistency coefficient, stability coefficient, and inter-rater reliability), the construct validity (Confirmatory Factor Analysis), and the quality of items (Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory) of the rubric. After re-examining the items of the rubric with the results of the statistical analyses, we finalized the rubric into 35 items under 5 subcategories. Detailed processes of developing the rubric and testing its reliability, validity, and the quality of items and discussions are given.
