This article addresses didactic methods that support the learner in learning vocabulary so that it can not only be used for reception(listening and reading) but for production (speaking and writing) as well. To do this aspects of language processing will be examined with regard to the Duality Hypothesis, which states that language production is guided by and based on both rules (rule-based) and data (example-based). This article focuses on example-based language production processes and discusses the relevance for the learner of acquiring chunks, patterns, and routines in L2 production processes with regard to native-like fluency and native-like selection. This discussion will show the necessity of helping foreign language learners to learn larger units of vocabulary (chunking) in the form of patterns(patternizing) with information from the context itself and its function within the context (routinizing). The possibilities of implementation for these didactic methods will be shown using examples from Korean as a foreign language by analyzing textbook vocabulary exercises and suggesting possibilities for improvement.
