A Study on the Domiciliation Conditions in the Depopulation Areas of the Gangwon-do - The Case of Rural and Mountain Areas -

The domiciliation conditions in the rural areas located in the eup and myeon regions of South Korea are deteriorating following the rapid progress of the phenomena of aging and decreasing populations in such areas. Regardless of the deteriorating domiciliation conditions of the residents of the rural areas of South Korea, however, the residents are showing high fondness for, and wish to continue residing in, their current residential area. Gangwon-do has a higher proportion of rural areas and shows a substantially higher aging rate in such areas compared to the other cities and provinces in South Korea. Hence, the severe aging phenomenon in the rural areas of South Korea is connected to the declining activities in such areas, and the regional economic recess that is currently occurring due to this is leading to a repetition of the vicious circle of decreasing population and deteriorating domiciliation conditions. Accordingly, a directional proposal for the improvement of the domiciliation conditions of Gangwon-do’s rural areas is needed.
