Wh-NPs are freely extracted out of negation in English, Chinese and Italian, whereas such an operation is systematically barred in Korean, Japanese, French, and German. This paper suggests that the cutting line would be that wh-words in the former languages bear a referential (or D-linked) property lexically, while it is not so in the languages of the latter type.
