A Study on the Guideline Development for Elderly Welfare Housing Unit Design

Considering increased importance in social welfare for the elderly, planning direction of elderly welfare housing must be reviewed. The purpose of this study was to provide essential information to develop unit design guideline of elderly welfare housing. Specific goals of this study were to explore present condition of elderly welfare housing, investigate design guidelines of elderly housing including layout, types, unit size and planning direction of interior space. The findings are summarized as follows: (1) Major types of unit layout of elderly welfare housing were classified into the one-loaded corridor type, double-loaded corridor type, courtyard and walk up types; (2) proper room size defined in previous studies was 20-30㎡ for a single-person household and 30-60㎡ for a two-person household; and (3) it is important to consider use of wheelchair and human-scale in designing each room (entrance, livingroom, bedroom, kitchen/dining room, bathroom, and balcony) of elderly welfare housing.
