Mothers’ Parenting Behaviors, Marital Satisfaction and Children’s Prosocial Behavior

The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in children’s prosocial behaviors according to mother’s parenting behavior and marital satisfaction. The participants of this study were 100 5-year-old children attending in 2 kindergartens and their mothers in Chong-ju. To analyse data, Chronbach’s α, two-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression analyses with SPSS/WIN 10.0 program were used. The findings of this study were as follows: First, among mother’s parenting behaviors, coherence affected most to children’s prosocial behavior such as, controling their emotions, building up relationships, and adaptation to kindergarten. Positive correlations were found between mothers’ coherence and children’s prosocial behaviors. Second, the next influential factor on children’s prosocial behavior was mother’s affection. Positive correlations were found between mothers’ affection and children’s emotional control and adaptation to kindergarten. Third, negative correlations were found between mothers’ corporal punishment and children’s emotional control, building up relationships, and adaptation to kindergarten. Children with mothers of frequent corporal punishment showed low level of prosocial behaviors. Fourth, a positive correlation was found between mothers’ marital satisfaction and children’s adaptation to kindergarten.
