The aim of this study was to investigate how phonics instruction could influence EFL elementary school learners’ reading abilities and interests in learning to read in English. For the purpose of the study, the following issues were addressed. First, it analyzed the effects the implementation of phonics would have on fifth graders’ understanding of the relationship between the letters and the sounds of the English alphabet. Secondly, the study examined whether there were any changes in the reading abilities of individual learners before and after the phonics instruction. Finally, it explored the impact of the phonics instruction on the attitudes of fifth graders toward learning to read in English. The results of the study suggested that the phonics activities helped improve the reading ability of elementary school English learners. At the same time, the results demonstrated that the improvement stimulated learners’ interest and motivation in learning to read in English, and thereby showed a positive impact on their overall interest and attitude for learning English. Based on the results of this study, suggestions were made for effective and systematic phonics instruction in the elementary school English classroom.
