예비유아교사의 자유선택놀이 경험에 관한 연구

Trainee Teachers' Experiences of Free-choice Play during Practicum

본 연구는 교육실습 기간 동안 예비유아교사들의 자유선택놀이의 경험을 심층적으로 살펴보고자 수행되었다. 연구에 참여한 스무 명의 서울소재 전문대학 3학년 예비유아교사들은 4월 4주간의 교육실습기간에 각 놀이영역의 환경구성, 교사의 유아놀이 개입, 유아들의 자유선택놀이 계획, 실행, 평가에 대한 과제를 수행했다. 또한 자유선택활동 경험을 중심으로 한 반성적 저널쓰기 과제를 부여 받았다. 실습이 종료된 후 다섯 명의 학생은 실습경험과 관련해 포커스 그룹 면담을 실시했다. 연구결과 예비유아교사들은 실습기간 동안 유아교육현장에서 이루어지는 자유선택놀이를 관찰한 후 교사가 자유선택놀이를 계획, 실행, 평가를 수행함에 있어서 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 인식하게 되었다. 지도교사가 적절한 역할을 수행하는 경우도 있었으나 그렇지 못한 실습현장에서는 학교에서 배운 진정한 의미의 이상적인 자유선택활동이 아닌 것에 대한 혼란을 경험하기도 했음이 드러났다. 또한 예비유아교사들은 자유선택활동을 방해하는 요소들을 조건부 자유선택활동, 특별활동으로 밀려나는 자유선택활동, 환경적 제약으로 인식하고 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 교육실습이 예비유아교사들이 자유선택활동의 다양한 측면을 경험하게 하는 기회가 되며, 현장에서의 경험이 현재를 살아가는 유아들의 놀이 현실을 반영하고 있음을 시사한다.

This study aims at exploring pre-service teachers' perception on free-choice play during practicum. The participants of the current study were 25 college students who were taking the course "Play Instruction." Data was collected through their observation notes, assignments during practicum, reflective journals, and focus group interviews. The results of the study show that trainee teachers believed that the teachers' role was critical in terms of providing developmentally appropriate play materials and arranging enough time for play. However, they also observed many obstacles in children's free play due to academic activities. Although pre-service teachers have been taught the importance of free play, they perceived that there was a gap between theory and practice. For instance, allocating only a short period of time to play suggests that play is not a very important thing to do and discourage children from become involved in complex play. Teachers should plan free play periods carefully in order to ensure that there is sufficient time for complex play to emerge. However, some pre-service teachers observed that children should finish structured activities in order to be allowed to play. For some children it took a long time to finish the assigned activity and had a limited time to play. There was desirable learning happening through practicum. Trainee teachers perceived that the teachers role was critical in supporting play. They observed that teachers, who value play as an important learning experience and who actively support that play, make a difference to the type and level of play that occur.
