E. 사이드의 『오리엔탈리즘』에 남겨진 푸코의 유산

M. Foucault's Legacy in Orientalism of E. W. Said

본 논문의 목표는 사이드의 『오리엔탈리즘』에 미친 푸코의 영향이 무엇인지를 분석하는 것이다. 사이드는 『오리엔탈리즘』을 쓸 때, 탈식민주의 담론에 대해서는 파농의 영향을, 문화의 힘에 대해서는 윌리엄스의 영향을, 헤게모니 개념에 대해서는 그람시의 영향을 받았고, 담론 연구라는 방법론과 관련해서는 푸코의 영향을 받았다. 본 논문은 특히 마지막 두 사상가의 영향에 초점을 맞춘다. 사이드는 푸코의 담론 개념을 그람시의 헤게모니 개념과 결합했다. 사이드가 자신에게 영향을 미친 사상가들의 사유를 그대로 물려받은 것이 아니라 자신의 관점에서 수정하여 받아들였기 때문에, 다음과 같은 물음이 제기된다. 이러한 결합은 이론적으로 유효한가? 또한 실제로 사이드의 저술에서 유용한 방법론이었는가? 이물음은 『오리엔탈리즘』에 미친 푸코의 영향을 평가하는 물음일 뿐만 아니라, 『오리엔탈리즘』의 방법론을 평가하는 물음이기도 하다. 푸코의 담론 개념과 그람시의 헤게모니 개념은 둘 다 권력과 관계있는 개념이다. 그런데 두 개념이 바탕으로 하고 있는 권력은 각각 푸코와 마르크스주의의 권력 개념이다. 푸코의 권력 개념과 마르크스주의의 권력 개념은 양립하지 않는다. 이러한 근본적인 문제로 인해서 사이드의 시도 즉, 푸코와 그람시에 대한 종합은 성공하지 못한다. 결국 사이드는 텍스트, 지식인의 역할, 지배와 저항 등의 문제에 있어 푸코와 거리가 멀어진다.

This study is the analysis of Foucault's influence over Said's Orientalism. When Said wrote Orientalism, he was influenced by F. Fanon(post-colonialism, by R. Williams(power of culture), by A. Gramsci(notion of hegemony), by M. Foucault(analysis of discourses). Especially, This study focuses on the last two influence. In Said, Foucault's notion of the discourse is combined with Gramsci's notion of hegemony. Said accepted their notion in his proper purpose and he often changed those notion in his vision. So we can ask questions : Is combination of Foucault's notion of the discourse with Gramsci's notion of hegemony theoretically valid? Is that useful as methodology in his work? These questions are not asked only on Foucault's influence over Orientalism, but also on methodology of Orientalism. Both Foucault's notion of the discourse and Gramsci's notion of hegemony are in relation with power. Foucault's concept of power is not compatible with Marxist concept of power. This is fundamental reason that Said's synthesization of Foucault and Gramsci failed. And also Said kept his distance from Foucault in terms of the definition of text, the roll of the intellectual, the problem of domination and resistance.
