맥도날드화에 대한 비판적 고찰

A critical study on the Mcdonaldization : Jung-il Jang's poem <Meditation about the Hamburger>

20세기 초반에 한국에서 이루어졌던 미국 문화의 수용은 20세기 후반에 식품 서비스 산업이 발달하면서 더욱 활성화되었다. 당시 각종 ‘CF(Convenience Foods)’가 도입되고 패스트푸드(Fast Foods) 서비스가 빠른 속도로 전파되면서 한국의 식탁에 미국의 음식이 오르는 일이 빈번해졌다. 이는 한국뿐만 아니라 타국에서도 빈번하게 발생한 현상이었다. 결국 전 세계적으로 'M'모양의 로고와 햄버거는 맥도날드의 상징(Symbol)이 되었고, 맥도날드는 미국의 상징이 되었다. 미국화(Americanization)는 사고와 감각을 마비하면서 인간의 생활양식에 깊숙이 침투했다. 장정일의 시 <햄버거에 대한 명상>은 바로 이러한 미국화의 단면을 꼬집어 해학적으로 풀이한 작품이다. 이 작품에서 그는 햄버거의 재료와 조리과정을 미국적 사고가 한국인에게 점차 주입되는 과정에 빗대어 ‘명상’했다. 본 연구에서 필자는 장정일의 시구를 살펴보며 미국문화가 그들을 대표하는 상징을 활용함으로써 감각을 통해 사고를 조작하는 과정을 분석하였다. 그리고 이를 ‘미국화’라 칭하며, 미국화의 한 요소로서의 ‘맥도날드화’에 대해 비판적으로 고찰하였다. 결국 본 연구의 의의는 시대의 흐름에 의해 암묵적으로 수용하고 있는 타문화에 대한 인식과 잊혀져가는 자문화의 중요성을 다시 한번 자각하는데 있다.

In the beginning of the 20thcentury, American culture began to be accepted in Korea and later became more prevalent when the food service industry developed in late 20thcentury. American food was served in Korean dining mediums more frequently after a variety of ‘CFs(Convenience Foods)’ and fast food services spread rapidly, and this phenomenon was not limited only to Korea only. Finally the ‘M’ shaped logo and hamburger became the symbol of McDonalds all over the world and McDonalds itself became the symbol of America. Inflow of American culture was advanced through a variety of media outlets in addition to food systems. Americanization had penetrated deeply in the human lifestyle paralyzing thoughts and feelings. Present everywhere disguised as natural and accepted by people implicitly. Jung-il Jang’s poem <Meditation about the hamburger> points out and satirically portrays this characteristic of Americanization. The poet ‘meditates’ ingredients and recipe of the hamburger turning them into the invasive procedure of the American way of thinking into Koreans. This research looks into Jung-il Jang’s poem and analyzes how American culture controls thoughts through senses by utilizing their representative symbols. This procedure is named ‘Americanization’, and ‘McDonaldization’, It is critically studied as one of component of Americanization. The significance of this research is to recognize the implicit and passive acceptance of foreign culture with passing of time, and the process of which we realize the importance of the nearly forgotten traditional culture.
