부디즘, 불교, 불연의 엘리아데

The “Discovery” of “Buddhism” in the West, “Bulgyo” and Eliade’s Ideas in Korea

15세기 조선시대의 『현정론』과 『유석질의론』은 유교의 배불론에 맞서서 삼교일치론으로 불교의 위치를 지키려고 하였다. 20세기 초의 이능화는 개신교의 공격적인 불교비방에 맞서서 “모든 종교가 회통한다”는 주장으로 불교의 필요성을 개진하는 한편, 각 개별 종교 전통의 통사를 집필하였다. 20세기 후반에는 불연이 엘리아데를 한국에 소개하여 불교가 차지하는 한국종교사에서의 중요성을 확산하고자 노력하였다. 불연이 엘리아데를 주목한 것은 지구상에서 개신교의 배타성과 편협성이 가장 극단으로 치닫는 한국에서 엘리아데가 하나의 완충제 역할을 할 수 있다고 여겼기 때문일 것이다.

This paper is to examine three cases of adaptive attitudes in the his tory of thought in Korea, which were led to the discourses of the unity and the commonality among them: the discourse of unity among Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism in the 15th century; Historiography of religions written by Yi Nung-hwa(1869-1943); Yi Ki-young(1922-1996)’s introduction of Eliade’s ideas into Korea. Three cases show a common feature to respond to the attacks of the powerful religion of Confucianism (15th century) and Protestantism(19th and 20th centuries). Yi Ki-Young’s introduction of Eliade’s ideas into the study of Buddhism might create a kind of “buffer-zone” of the conflicts between Buddhism and Christianity of today’s Korea.
