Recently, in the field of teaching English, some researchers have used qualitative inquiry (QI) as the main tool of investigation. Although QI is still in its infancy, it has attracted researchers because of its potential to assist in their diverse research needs. Other researchers have addressed the strong need to integrate qualitative and quantitative analysis in a single study or as a continuum. However, there is still a paucity of literature which addresses the practical issues of how to do this with the aid of the computer aided qualitative data analysis system (CAQDAS). Therefore, this paper reports how NVivo 9 has made the QI process feasible, in addition to making the integration of quantitative and qualitative data analysis possible. By adopting CAQDAS, one may overcome the intrinsic limitations of QI, which has been criticized for its lack of reliability and validity in terms of data handling procedures and the generalization of research findings. In addition, CAQDAS and in particular, NVivo 9 may enhance the quality of data analysis in an in-depth and systematic manner. NVivo 9's unique features will be demonstrated, together with contexts for using it drawn from relevant empirical studies in teaching English.
