A Study of Aesthetic Expression of Body Ornaments -focusing on the film 'Apocalypto'-

This study has attempted to analyze the expression method of aesthetic body ornaments based on the data in a film and evaluate its symbolic meaning. The aesthetic expression of body ornaments in the film can be summarized into ‘grotesque’ and‘ erotic.’ In terms of characteristics, ‘grotesque’ reveals incantation, ostentation and resistance while ‘erotic’ includes primitive, mysterious and ornamental expressions. By decorating the body using various techniques (ex: deformation, ostentation, enlargement, tattooing, piercing, painting, etc.), it becomes valuable in terms of aesthetic beauty with power, courage, sexual desire, body protection and incantatory thinking. This kind of bold body ornaments based on narcissistic desire has included it within beauty domain. Recently, the domain of body ornament-based aesthetic expressions has expanded from the dark and shallow culture into popular culture. It is expected that this kind of trend would have a significant impact on body art and fashion.
