청소년의 국민정체성과 다문화적태도 분석연구

The analysis of national identity and multicultural attitudes among youth

본 연구는 다문화사회의 주역이 될 청소년의 국민정체성과 다문화적 태도를 진단하고, 국민정체성이 다문화적 태도에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 국민정체성은 혈통적-종족적 요인 중심의 종족정체성과 정치적-법적인 요인의 시민정체성으로 나누어 살펴보았으며, 다문화적 태도는 다문화지향성과 자문화지향성, 이주자 집단으로 인한 위협 인지의 3가지 영역으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 1099명의 서울시내의 중고등학생을 분석한 결과 청소년들의 국민정체성은 2가지 요인인 종족적 요인과 시민적 요인에 있어서 시민적 요인을 보다 더 중요하게 인식하고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 청소년의 다문화적 태도는 다문화지향성이 자민족중심의 자문화지향성과 이주자 집단으로 인한 위협의 인지보다 높게 나타나 다문화사회로의 변화에 비교적 긍정적이고 개방적인 태도를 보이고 있었다. 국민정체성에 영향을 미치는 요인을 검토해본 결과, 종족정체성에는 연령과 성별과 성적, 시민정체성에는 연령과 성적으로 파악되었다. 국민정체성이 다문화적 태도에 미치는 영향에 있어서는 시민정체성이 다문화지향성에만 정적인 영향을 미친 반면, 종족정체성은 다문화지향성에는 부적인 영향을, 자문화지향성과 이주로 인한 위협에는 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다. 이를 통해 다문화교육에 있어서 청소년의 민족정체성이 다문화사회로의 변화에 긍정적 기반이 될 수 있도록 다문화주의와 양립할 수 있는 새로운 민족주의의 재개념화와 이에 따른 교육을 제안하고자 한다.

The purpose of this study is to examine characteristics of adolescents’ perceptions of national identity and multicultural attitudes and to identify relationships between perceptions of national identity and multicultrual attitudes. Data for this study came from a survey carried out by 1099 Korean middle and high school students in Seoul. To analyze adolescents’ perception of national identity, this study divided national identity into the ethnic factors and civic factors. Multicultural attitudes consisted of attitudes toward muliticulturalism, attitudes toward ethnocentrism and perceptions of threat from migrants. Major findings are as follows. Korean youths considered the civic factors more important than the ethnic factors. The levels of attitudes toward Multiculturalism are higher than attitudes toward ethnocentrism and perceptions of threat from migrants. As a result of reviewing the factors affecting national identity, this research revealed the factors such as age, gender and grades of social studies affect ethnic identity. Age of youth and grades of social studies are affecting factors in case of civic identity. Multiple regression analysis showed that not civic factors but ethnic factors affect all the multicultural attitudes. This means in Korean national identity ethnic factors are still significant and powerful background toward muliticulturalism. Accordingly, this study suggests that there should be the need for a re-conceptualization of nationalism which can be compatible with multiculturalism.
