Forms and structures of n-grams in English corpora for elementary school students

This paper attempts to explore forms and structures of n-grams in English corpora for elementary school students. For the purpose, corpora are collected from fantasy movies, English children’s literature, English newspapers for children, CANCODE (Cambridge and Nottingham corpus of discourse in English), and English textbooks for Korean elementary school students. N-grams have begun to attract much attention in corpus studies in teaching English as a second or foreign language. This paper specifically explores the forms and structures of 2 to 6-gram in English corpora for elementary school students. The analysis results show that n-grams are ubiquitous across the corpora, but that n-grams in elementary English textbooks are unique and limited in terms of forms and structures. Although the corpora for this study are limited, the findings drawn from the analysis of n-grams may have some important pedagogical implications for elementary English teaching and learning.
