There was a fiery debate over two important questions regarding ethics at the early period of Islamic age: the first question about ontology, and the second question was about epistemology. The question on ontology was about 'what is the essential nature ethical values such as defining what is good and just,' and the question on epistemology was about 'how can human beings perceive the existence of such concepts in specific situations.' These are philosophical and theological questions, and also related to Sharī‘ah. Debates over these questions arose quite obviously. In other words, Muslims debated on what Qur'ān was teaching with respect to the essential nature of ethical values. This paper will research this issue as it happened during the early period of Islamic age. The reason for it is because the debate over the questions is still being waged today although it's not as much compared to the early Islamic age, and the understanding of the debates which occurred during the early Islamic age is crucial in understanding this issue.
