Reading Ethnographic Writings on Ukrainian Wedding Rituals

우크라이나 혼례에 관한 민족지학 연구 읽기

본 논문은 소련과 북미지역에서 진행된 우크라이나 혼례에 관한 민속학 논문을 선택하여 이들 논문에서 진행된 논제들을 분석하고, 저자들의 주장이 어떻게 구성되어 나가는지를 비교했다. 또한 양 지역에서 사용된 연구방법과 이론, 연구 자료들의 선택과 분석과정 또한 비교하였다. 데이비드 제이콥슨(David Jacobson)의 저서 '민족지학 읽기' ( Reading Ethnography)를 모델로 하여, 본 연구는 선택된 논문들에 나타난 주장(claims)과 이를 뒷받침하는 자료(data)들의 관계를 분석하고, 소련과 북미 지역에서 민족지학 연구의 특성을 찾으려 노력했다. 소련의 민족지학자들은 민속전통을 사회주의건설의 입장에서 바라보는 경향이 강했으며, 새로운 사회주의사회 건설을 위해 구태의연하고 나쁜 관습은 사라져야 한다고 주장하는 경우가 많았다. 반대로 북미의 연구자들은 낭만주의적 경향과 민속의 정치적 사용에 대해 반대하며, 사회의 진보, 발전적 측면에서 민속 문화가 나아갈 길을 찾기 보다는 사회의 역학구조 속에서 민속이 어떻게 역동적으로 변화해 가는지에 관심을 기울였으며, 민속을 변화시키는 다양한 원인들을 찾으려 노력했다.

This study chooses five ethnographic writings, published in North America and the Soviet Union, and attempt to analyze and evaluate their arguments and textual organization. On the basis of David Jacobson's idea in Reading Ethnography, I focus on finding "claims" and "data" of each ethnographic writing, and analyze how they warrant each other. Judging from this study, it would say that during the Soviet period, ethnographers tend to interpret folk tradition in terms of socialist construction, and believe that folklore has to change in the way that is desirable to new reality, that is, socialist society. On the contrary, North American researchers tend to minimize the tendency toward romanticism and political use of folklore, and find various process of cultural change.
