의사소통의 맥락에서 본 <호질>의 풍자성

Satires in “ Hojil” from the Perspective of Communication

<호질(虎叱)>은 중층의 의미 구조를 가진 작품이어서 다양한 해석이 시도되어 왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 작품에 등장하는 ‘동리자’의 다섯 아들은 대체로 어리석은 인물이라는 생각이 주류를 이루었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 결론에 의문을 가지고 발화의 특성을 원용하여 다섯 아들이 누구이며, 무엇을 말하고, 어떻게 상황에 대처하는가 분석해 보았다. 그 결과, 다섯 아들을 어리석다고 판단하는 것은 근거가 박약하며, 그들은 오히려 북곽을 여우에 견줌으로써 북곽의 위선적 행동을 독자가 알도록 유도하고 자신들 또한 풍자의 대상이 됨으로써 중층의 의미를 구현하는 역할을 작품에서 맡고 있음을 확인하였다. 이처럼 풍자의 주체가 곧 풍자의 대상이기도 한 설정 방식은 호질 구성의 특이성과 무관하지 않다. 작가인 연암 박지원은 작품이 중국인에 의해 쓰여진 것이라는 말을 덧붙임으로써 ‘범’(虎)을 청나라로 해석할 여지를 제공한다. 그러면서 청나라가 취한 여러 가지 변화에 대해 비판적인 의견을 제시하고 있다. 이렇게 함으로써 ‘범’ 역시 북곽을 비판하는 주체이면서 그 스스로가 비판의 대상이 된다. 여기에 더하여 작가는 북곽의 비행(卑行)을 전면에 노출시켜 관심을 끌도록 하면서 당대 조선의 대외관계나 학문적 성향 등이 지닌 문제를 폭로하고 있다. 이에 따라 <호질>은 작가가 표현하고자 하는 의도를 교묘하게 감추면서 표현 효과를 극대화한 수준 높은 풍자기법이 동원된 작품이라고 평가할 수 있다.

As Hojil(虎叱) has multiple layers of meaning structure, various interpretation trials have been made. Nevertheless, it has been thought that five sons of ‘Dongrija’ are stupid. The only ground of such judgment is their conversation saying that it must be a fox seeing ‘Bukgwakseonsaeng’ committing adultery. This article tried to analyze who were they, what they talked, and how they responded to the situation with the suspicion on such conclusion. Accordingly, it was found that the judgment was groundless and actually they used unusual speeches facing extraordinary situations. Five sons compared Bukgwak to a fox in order to induce readers to know his hypocritical behaviors and to become the subjects of the satire themselves. Through this, they played the role of realizing the multiple meanings. The setting to make the subject of the satire the object of such satire is closely related with the uniqueness of the configuration of Hojil The writer, Park Jiwon added the comment that this was written by a Chinese to provide possibility to interpret ‘Tiger (虎)’ as Qing. At the same time, he provided critical opinions against the changes that Qing had made. By doing this, ‘Tiger’, too, became the subject to satire Bukgwak and at the same time it became the object of the satire. The writer disclosed misbehaviors of Bukgwak and induced the attention of readers to them to disclose the limitations of Chosun in diplomatic relations and academic inclinations. Accordingly, Hojil can be evaluated as the work making most of satires hiding the intention of the writer delicately while maximizing the effects of expression.
