언론기관 자국 내 대학순위평가의 현황과 쟁점 분석

Analysis on the Conditions and Issues of Domestic College Ranking Systems by Media Agencies

이 연구는 국내외 언론기관에서 실시하고 있는 자국 내 대학순위평가의 현황과 주요 특징을 비교 분석하고, 베를린 원칙(Berlin Principles on Ranking of Higher Education Institutions)의 프레임에 근거하여 쟁점과 개선방안 등을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 국내 언론기관 순위평가로서 중앙일보와 경향신문의 국내 대학순위평가와 국외 언론기관의 자국내 대학순위평가로서 미국 US News & World Reports의 America’s Best Colleges와 Washington Monthly의 Top Colleges & Universities, 영국 The Times의 Good University Guide와 Guardian의 University Guide 등의 6개 사업을 비교 분석하였다. 순위평가의 목적과 목표, 평가방법, 순위평가 결과의 발표 등의 영역에서 한국, 미국, 영국 각각의 언론기관 대학순위평가의 차이점과 공통점, 쟁점 등을 논의하고 향후 개선방안을 모색하였다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the present conditions, characteristics, and issues of domestic college ranking systems by media agencies in South Korea, U. S. and U. K. and to suggest the improvement plans of college evaluation based on the Berlin Principles on Ranking of Higher Education Institutions. To achieve this goal, we examined representative college ranking systems of South Korea, U. S. and U. K. and made a comparative study of six cases: Joong-Ang Daily and The Kyunghyang Shinmun, U. S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly, The Times and Guardian. We discussed the differences and issues each of the domestic college ranking system based on a framework for analysis in three criteria including purposes and goals of rankings, methodologies, presentation of ranking results. Eventually, we suggested policy implications to improve college ranking systems.
