A study on the development of a technology-based writing model for enhancing Korean EFL learners’ critical thinking

The purpose of this study is to develop a technology-based writing model for enhancing Korean college students’ critical thinking. In order to achieve this aim, the study raised the following research questions: 1) what is the effect of reading-based writing tasks on Korean college students’ critical reading, writing, and thinking?; 2) what kinds of technology tools and help options are most needed for the technology-based critical writing system?; 3) what is desirable technology-based writing model for critical thinking? The participants of the study were 23 female university students who took an English writing course in the fall semester of 2011. Major findings of the study are as follows: first, reading-based writing tasks with critical thinking questions proved to be effective in enhancing the participants’ critical reading and argumentative essay writing skills. Second, the needs analysis reveals the following technology tools and help options are most wanted: 1) reading source texts, other reading resources, group discussions, and highlighting tools for the reading stage, 2) online thesaurus, paraphrase tips, timer, spelling checking system, and online dictionary for the writing stage, 3) peer and teacher feedback system for the post-writing stage, and 4) useful expressions, self-/peer-feedback checklists for online help options. Lastly, a technology-based writing model for critical thinking is suggested based on theories on CALL, findings and the needs analysis of this action research.
