Aspects of Recreation of Character Forms of 「Sounjeon(蘇雲傳)」

「Sounjeon(蘇雲傳)」is a Joseon novel which is a recreation of the script-type colloquial Chinese novel 「Sojihyeonnasamjaehap(蘇知縣羅衫再合)」. The purpose of this article is to examine the aspects of recreation of character forms of 「Sounjeon」to find the literary achievements and/or creative elements achieved in the adaptation process of this work. This report takes on the position that adaptation can result in a masterwork that surpasses the original, and divides the aspects of reconfiguration and embodiment of characters of 「Sounjeon」 into three areas of character removal and role integration, creation of additional characters, and recreation of the personality of the existing characters for comparison and consideration per character, and discussed the overall characteristics and significance of character reconfiguration. Found in the aspects of character form recreation shown through adaptation are the unique perspectives of the author of 「Sounjeon」 on world, life, and women, progressive spirit of the era, and ideal and aim of life of nobility class. The author exercises his creative capacity through character reconfiguration to create characteristical characters and unique narratives so as to actualize an original theme, which succeeded as a recreation distinguished from 「Sojihyeonnasamjaehap」. Moreover, the reconfigured characters are portray so that their personalities and behaviors are consistent with internal logic so that it surpasses the original work from the perspective of rationality. In other words, from the perspective of character formalization, 「Sounjeon」is not a simple adaptation or recreation with just lingual conversion, but is a recreation work with independent literary value which surpasses the original in literary completeness.
