This study investigates the English developmental process in an ESL situation through a case study from young Korean students. An interview and an analysis of subjects’ reading and writing materials have been used to examine the English developmental process of ESL learners. Two research questions are established for the study: 1) Are there any developmental orders among listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English?; and 2) Are there any interlanguage developmental processes in the English acquisition process? The results of this study show that there are developmental orders in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing of English. Age and previous knowledge of learners mainly affect the developmental orders in the process of second language acquisition. Moreover, it has been discovered that three sequential interlanguage developmental processes exist in the acquisition process of English in ESL situation: 1) silent period; 2) first language transfer period; and 3) overgeneralization period. Although there are individual differences in the speed of acquiring the target language, three sequential developmental processes are generally in operation in the interlanguage correction process.
