Development of general English courses at the University level: Analysis of curricular and learner needs

In an effort to develop an effective general English program of a university, the present study examined curricular and learner needs for general English courses of universities. The curricular of general English programs collected from a total of fifty seven (N=57) universities in South Korea were analyzed to examine class teaching hours, credits, courses, diffentiated-level classes, on-line courses, and a waiving policy of credits based on student proficiency. Also the survey and the interviews were carried out with the freshmen students studying in one university (N=801) to find out their needs on general English courses. The curricular analysis showed the followings: 1) most of universities preferred 6 hours/6 credits English courses with four skills integrated; 2) in twenty universities (N=20), there existed a gap between class teaching hours of general English courses and academic credits student receive from the courses; 3) almost half of university adopted diffentiated-level classes and a waiving policy of general English courses. The results of surveys showed that the participants have strong needs for improving their practical English skills and differentiated-level education. Also it was found that the participants’ perception on using online class was different according to their English proficiency.
