The effects of collocation-based vocabulary instruction on elementary students’ vocabulary and reading ability

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean elementary school learners’ collocational competence and to identify the effects of collocation-based vocabulary instruction on reading ability. To do this, 62 sixth graders were chosen as the subject group and they were given three kinds of tests: individual vocabulary, collocations, and reading comprehension. Also a survey about the students’ interests of learning English was conducted. They took pre- and post-tests for all of the test types. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the experimental group showed much greater improvement in their understanding of collocational expressions than the control group. That suggests the collocational method improves the students’ collocational recognition. Second, the experimental group showed more improvement in reading comprehension than the control group. Third, the experimental group became more interested in studying English and reading while the control group didn’t show any significant difference between the pre- and post-survey regarding their interest in reading. According to these results, when instructors teach English, especially when they teach reading, they need to empower students to recognize the concept of collocation so they can comprehend the contexts of sentences naturally through various chunk-reading activities and methods.
