The effects of the use of graphic organizers on English listening comprehension and the attitude of Korean middle school students

This study investigates the effects of the use of graphic organizers on the listening comprehension and the affective aspects of Korean middle school students. A total of 60 students participated in the study and they were divided into two groups: The control group taught to follow traditional listening instruction and the experimental group taught to use graphic organizers over whole listening activities. The results of the study indicate that there was a statistically significant difference in understanding aural texts between the control group and the experimental group. This proves the positive effects of graphic organizers on listening comprehension. Further, there was a significant difference depending on leamers’ listening proficiency. Specifically, the effects of graphic organizers were more effective to low level than high level learners. Lastly, as for the learners’ attitude toward the use of graphic organizers on listening comprehension, learners showed changes from the negatives to the positives over four items of questionnaires: recognition of the story grammar, interests, confidence, and persistent use of the graphic organizers.
