A Study on the Borrowing of Elements of the Madang Play by Hwang Seok Young's Novel,『Jang Gil San』

This study starts from raising a question why researches about historic novels of this nation have devoted themselves to the themes of those novels or their authors' consciousness of history. By reviewing prior researches, this study found that researches about techniques used to create historic novels have been rare despite very basic for literature exploration. Researching historic novels, unlike ordinary ones, usually focuses on their theme or their author's view of history. This may be due to the unique characteristics of historic novels' own. But in fact, it is because historic novels are usually recognized best characterized by reality, or history itself. Another characteristic inherent in historic novels is fiction. To investigate that characteristics, it's importantly required to identify what techniques of fiction are often used in historic novels. In this study, this researcher examined how Hwang Seok Young borrowed elements of the Madang Play in creating one of the most representative novels in 1970s which he wrote, that is,『Jang Gil San』. And the researcher examined meanings that elements of the Madang Play chosen by the author created in his novel,『Jang Gil San』, and whether those meanings contributed to the populist-orientation of that novel. This study discussed in detail that『Jang Gil San』intensified its populist-orientation by utilizing elements of the Madang Play, which were developed into a kind of entertainment in 1970s, in those of its creation, borrowing ‘pansori’ styles, and introducing folk and shaman songs to itself. It was 1970s when the concept of the people began to emerge in earnest. It was also when the biggest focus was being put on harsh lives of general people who were isolated under the shadow of industrialization. At that time, the masses were becoming the main subject of historic novels. This study found novel,『Jang Gil San』had something to do with social situations of the times when it was published. In that novel, thus, elements of the Madang Play make remarkable the public that were the very focus of 1970s. This study called attention to the need of examining characteristic techniques used to create historic novels well known in the Korean history of literature in accordance with periods when those novels were written. This researcher is trying another research in the future whose aim is to determine correlations between when historic novels were created and what techniques were used for the creation. That research is expected to play an important role in clarifying how literature and society are related to each other.
