알프레드 월리스와 조셉 콘라드의 ‘熱帶性’에 대한 인식

Integrating Alfred Wallace's Biogeography and Joseph Conrad's Literary Imagination: The Tropicality of Space in Southeast Asia

이 글은 월리스의 생물지리학적 인식이 콘라드의 동남아시아에 관한 문학적 인식에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. ‘월리시아’로 상징되는 생물지리학적 공간이 ‘술루 지대’로 대표되는 역사지리적 공간과 어떻게 연관성을 갖는지를 탐구하고 있는 이 글은 술루 지대에 대한 콘라드의 문학적 상상력과 월리스의 생물지리학을 융합함으로써 콘라드가 동남아시아에 대한 열대성을 어떻게 인식하는지를 분석한다. 훔볼트 과학에 기초하고 있는 빅토리아 시대의 과학문화는 월리스와 콘라드의 열대 동남아시아에 대한 인식의 공유를 위한 토양이 되었다. 이 글의 의의는 열대성이 동남아시아의 다양하고도 복합적인 생물학적 차원과 문화적인 차원을 동시에 이해하기 위한 개념적 틀로 광범위한 설명력을 갖고 있음을 보여주는데 있다.

Beginning with the question in which how Alfred Wallace’s biogeography and Joseph Conrad’s literary imagination are integrated to investigate the tropicality of the space in Southeast Asia, the paper tries to analyze how there lies common tropicality between ‘Wallacea’ as biogeogaphical space and the Sulu Zone as historical-geographical space. Wallace’s biogeographical view that geographical distribution of the species largely depended upon geological structure of the earth was based on his strenuous efforts to link geology, biology and geography in Malay Archipelago. It is in Sarawak that Conrad decided to play literary imagination in the wake of Wallace. James Brooke became a significant model for White Rajah in Conrad’s Lord Jim. Conrad’s Eastern novels consistently demonstrate the tropicality of Wallacean vegetation as “the mighty Kosmos in perfect equilibrium” whose building blocks consist of accuracy, harmony, exactness, strength and fragility. My paper argues that the integration of biogeographical and literary imagination may contribute to the recognition of the tropicality of biogeographical and historical-geographical space in Southeast Asia.
