장애인 소설에 나타난 ‘장애’ 인식의 양상

Perception on ‘disabilities’ in novels on people with disabilities - Focusing on novels written by people with disabilities -

본고는 장애인 소설을 대상으로 장애인의 ‘장애’ 인식 양상을 살펴보았다. 장애인 소설의 장애 인식은 자신들을 타자화하여 차별하는 대다수 비장애인의 인식을 거부하거나 장애 현실을 수용하고, 자기정체성을 탐구하는 양상을 보인다. 그러나 이 밖에도 신체적 장애를 포함하여 사회적 약자로까지 자의적으로 장애의 범주를 확장하여 ‘인정’과 ‘연대’의 기표로 새롭게 장애를 구성하고 있는 점은 흥미롭다. 〈해바라기 사랑〉, 〈엄마의 남자, 그리고〉의 주인공은 장애를 이유로 무성적 존재로 단정된 자신의 존재를 거부하고 세상에서 규정한 남성의 사랑에서 승화되고 있는 모습이며 〈소풍〉, 〈낙타가족〉, 〈신의낙엽〉은 장애를 가지고 있는 주인공의 고통스러운 장애의 현재적 상황을 목도하고 그것을 내면화하면서 자신의 정체성을 탐구해가는 과정에 천착하고 있다. 장애를 가진 신체에 내포되어 강제적으로 수용을 요구하는 폭력의 현실은 이제 그들에게 더 이상 위협이 될 수 없다. 〈평상이 말을 하다〉, 〈구멍가게와 겨울나무〉는 연대를 통해서 장애의 현실적 한계를 무화시키는 데에까지 나아가려 했으나 또 다른 데에서 장애의 벽을 맞닥트리게 되면서 장애인의 주체적 장애 인식의 험난한 노정을 암시하고 있다. 장애인을 대상으로 한 문학 작품과 더불어 장애인이 창작 주체인 장애인 소설을 감상하는 것은 의식의 방향을 설정하는 문화적 담론의 장을 형성한다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

Perception on disabilities in novels on and by people with disabilities tends to objectify oneself to either reject the perception of majority of non-disabled people or accept the reality of disabilities and explore self identity. Yet it is interesting that disabilities as new signs of ‘acceptance’ and ‘solidarity’ are perceived in the extended territory of disabilities embracing not only physical disabilities but also disadvantaged people in the society. Main characters in 〈Sunflower Lover〉 and 〈Man of My Mother〉 reject the self image that is asexual because of disabilities and are sublimated into men in love commonly perceived in the society; in 〈A Picnic〉, 〈The Camel Family〉 and 〈Fallen Leaves of God〉, the main characters with disabilities witness and internalize the painful reality of disabilities to explore their self identities. The reality of violence nesting in the disabled bodies that forces acceptance is no longer a threat to them. 〈The Low Wooden Bench Speaks〉 and 〈The Corner Shop and The Winter Tree〉 attempt to reach the level of void of limit due to disabilities through solidarity yet face obstacles elsewhere, which implies a rough journey toward independent perception of disabled people on disabilities.
