Substantial interest exists for studying the health benefits of green tea due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of its components, which include flavonoids and polyphenolics. However, its effects on inner ear disease are unknown. It is well known that aminoglycoside antibiotics, anti-cancer medicines, and loud noises induce ototoxicity by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, this study investigated the effects of ethanol extracts of green tea on antioxidant activities. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities increased in the presence of green tea extract compared to the no treatment group. The GPX activity also increased dramatically in response to treatment with green tea extract in a dose-dependent manner(0.1-5 μg/mL). The level of GSH gradually increased in the presence of green tea extract. These results suggest that the effects of green tea on auditory disease may be explained, in part, by activation of intracellular antioxidant enzyme systems. Further studies are necessary to clarify the active constituents of green tea extract responsible for such antioxidative activities.
