This study examined the mechanisms underlying the cytotoxicity of the Sun-Hyang on a human colon cancer cell line. Semi-fermented tea, Sun-Hyang, was extracted with hot water for 3hr, three times to give hot water extracts. The anti-proliferative activity of the hot water extracts of HT-29 human colon cancer cells was examined by measuring the cancer cell viability and western blot. In this study, the Sun-Hyang extracts inhibited the growth of HT-29 human colon cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. The concomitant activation of the mitochondria-dependent apoptotic pathway occurred through modulation of Bax and Bcl-2 expression, resulting in the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3. This is the first report of the cytotoxic effect of Sun-Hyang on human colon cancer cells with a possible mechanism for this activity.
