Contemporary Art for Meaningful and Relevant Classroom Practices

우리와 동시대를 살아가는 작가들이 의미를 추구하고 창의적 사고와 전략을 개진하는 현대미술은 초등학교 미술수업에서 교육적 가치가 있으며 이를 의미 있게 수용하고 효과적으로 반영하는 것은 오늘날의 초등미술교육이 지향해야 할 바라 여겨진다. 이에 본 논문에서는 현대 미술의 동향을 제시하고 그 특성과 현황을 통해 현 초등학교 미술 교과서의 현대미술감상의 참고작품 도판의 비교분석을 시도한다. 이는 현대미술의 동향을 파악하고 현대미술의 초등학교 미술 수업에의 보다 의미 있는 연계와 적용을 위한 방향을 탐색하기 위함이다. 또한 초등학교 미술수업에서 현대미술을 유의미하게 적용할 수 있는 방법학적 접근을 모색하려 한다. 컨텐츠에 대한 제안 뿐 아니라 동시대의 현대미술에 적용된 창의적인 기법과 전략을 통해 실제 수업의 질적 향상을 이끌 수 있는 방안을 제안하려 한다. 본 연구에서는 현대미술의 창의적인 전략과 구성요소를 미술수업시간에 효율적이며 의미 있게 반영하는 방안을 제시한 연구결과를 소개하여 실제적인 활용을 모색한다.

This paper argues the need for integrating contemporary art practice into quality art curriculum in elementary art classroom setting. Contemporary art is sometimes unconventional or uncomfortable because it pushes the boundaries of traditional art forms. However, contemporary art might be served as the guide to visual culture art education, art integrated curriculum, art for life, and creative learning through communication and interaction among elementary students. Contemporary art is able to connect everyday experience, socio-cultural critique and creative expression with classroom learning. In this paper, I analysed contemporary art illustration included in multiple elementary art text books for the validity of this research. Further, I conducted the comparative analysis of text-book illustration and contemporary art publications by quality art critiques, in order to understand the status of contemporary art application in the current text books. This paper also presents pedagogical suggestions inspired by various art educators who have advocated the importance of comtemporary art in the classroom. Their strategic suggestions show new possibilities and modes of understanding art, contemporary culture, life and their relationships to students and ourselves.
