A Study on the Business Succession of Long-Established Family Firm

This Study explores the mechanism of the succession in the long-established family firm. This paper uses a case study to examine the Yamatogawa sake-brewing company in Fukushima prefecture, founded in 1790. Yauemon Sato, the current president, inherits the spirit of the predecessors. Yauemon Sato has reconstructed the company’s business systems in order to inherit the spirit of “sake brewing with the rice and water in Kitakata city, Fukushima”. And Masakazu Sato, his successor, is going to inherit the management practices of Yauemon Sato and the spirit of the predecessors.This paper addresses the intergenerational relationship in business succession to approach the inheritance and innovation of business.
