Analysis of middle school English textbook writing activities based on genre-based approach

The purpose of this research was to analyze writing activities in the middle school English textbooks in the aspects of genre, activity type, and language form. In order to accomplish the purpose, the following research questions were addressed; 1) What kinds of genre are implemented in middle school English textbooks? 2) What kinds of language forms in those writing activities are presented in middle school English textbooks? and 3) What kinds of support system such as teacher's instruction and examples are presented? Seven middle school English textbooks were selected for this research and every writing activity in each textbook was analyzed. The results of the study indicated that, firstly, various types of genres were incorporated in the activities, and 'social writing' was the most frequent writing activity, 'study writing' was the second, and 'personal writing' was the third. Secondly, a variety of language forms were implemented in those activities. Lastly, writing activities in a few textbooks were offered by linguistic or content support, some other textbooks do not have that kind of support system. Instructional implications for L2 writing task development and writing instruction, and ideas for L2 writing standards of National English curriculum in the Korean EFL context are suggested.
