Extracting technical vocabulary list for English Education

This article shows the development and evaluation of a technical vocabulary list for English Education. This list was compiled from a corpus of 300,000 running words of written academic texts from various books about SLA, teaching methodology and theory of English education. The frequency and range of words outside the basic words (GSL, West, 1953) and the academic words (AWL, Coxhead, 2000) of English were examined to identify the important words in the field of English Education. The technical vocabulary list for English Education contains 181 word families that account for 3.24% of the total words in English Education corpus compared to only 0.23% of the tokens in a fiction collection. This difference means that the technical vocabulary list is significantly different from English for general purpose, and it can be used to teach methods and principles of education specific to English, specifically the preparation for reading the English texts in the field of English Education.
