A study on the teaching of Spanish emphatic polarity items through a structural approach

This study investigates the affirmative and negative polarity items focused on the Spanish emphatic polarity items, which are used to emphasize the positive and negative value of the sentence. Many Korean students learning Spanish neither recognize emphatic polarity items nor know how to make the sentence with them according to the survey results. They consider that 'si’ and 'no' are only adverbs used for a response to the question and function as a modifier of verb. But emphatic polarity items, in fact, are very useful in the discourse to transmit the intention of speaker. That is to say, these items facilitate the communication. Therefore, I will investigate the Spanish emphatic polarity items in semantic and syntactic aspects. First of all, I will investigate their semantic effects captured in the discourse. Then I will argue that it is efficient to teach Spanish L2 speakers emphatic polarity items systematically through structural approach using hierarchical information structure. Spanish emphatic polarity items have typical structural properties with respect to the information structure such as topic, focus and they are similar to the sentences with wh-interrogatives and wh-exclamatives. En este trabajo intentamos tratar los términos de polaridad tanto afirmativa como negativa. En especial, nos concentraremos en los términos de polaridad de carácter enfático. Estos términos se relacionan con la estructura informativa para los elementos como tópico, foco, etc. Muchos aprendices coreanos de español como segunda lengua (L2) no reconocen los términos de polaridad ni saben usarlos, según los datos obtenidos en la encuesta. Los términos, por ejemplo, 'sí' y 'no', los consideran solo como adverbios de afirmación y negación. Pero, de hecho, en el discurso estos términos son muy útiles para entregar al oyente la información en la que se reflejan el pensamiento y el estado emocional del hablante y obtener la comunicación óptima entendiéndola por parte del oyente. Es decir, el uso de estos términos es una estrategia discursiva que facilita la comunicación. Por lo tanto, procuramos investigar la propiedad semántico-sintáctica de los términos de polaridad de carácter enfático. En primer lugar, trataremos las particularidades de su interpretación en el discurso. En segundo lugar, investigaremos las estructuras en las que se legitiman los términos de polaridad enfática, basándonos en las sirnilitudes sintácticas existentes entre las oraciones interrogativas y exclamativas y las oraciones con términos de polaridad enfática. E intentaremos proponer que se enseñen estos términos a través de la explicación estructural sobre la estructura jerárquica de información, ya que ellos tienen características estructurales en el orden de palabras y muestran sus comportamientos relacionados con otros elementos de la oración que funcionan como tópico y foco.
