A Study on Current Status and Development Direction of Korea ODA toward Africa

Since Africa is a repository of various mineral resources including petrolewn gas, Korea has been recognizing it is important to penetrate into African market in many different fields in terms of preoccupancy of a further emerging market and expansion of diplomatic influence as well as resource procurement. Africa has been magnified because of the expansion of purchasing power and its value as a production base resulting from plentiful resources and increase of the income. Thus, it is one of the most urgent issues for Korea to penetrate into African market. This study is to suggest Korea's development directions of economic cooperation and official development assistance(hereinafter referred to as 'ODA') toward Africa and to compare and analyz.e the current status and types of Korea and major advanced countries' development cooperation through ODA for Africa. Korea should support Africa by establishing a consultative body and infrastructure, an advantage of advanced eotmtries and emerging donor countries respectively, and by providing an aid of human resource empowerment which advanced and eirerging donor countries cannot provide in a balanced way so that Korea who are between traditional Western donor eotmtries and emerging donor countries can hold a dominant position Korea's major invlementation issues of development cooperation toward Africa have been suggested as passing-down of Korea's development experiences, public-private partnership establishment, and use of African Development Bank's trust funds.
