St Augustine's doctrine of interior illumination marks him off entirely from all thinkers who believe that knowledge takes its beginning from sense experience. Thus, his educational thought is chiefly summed up in two works, De Doctrine Christina and De Magisto. He taught that faith, not reason, is the only source of real truth. This paper aims to understand something of St. Augustine's notions of learning and teaching, and to show why he held learning to be self-instruction(teaching). In order to achieve this end, I have set three goals for this study. My first task is to examine his theological basic of epistemology: 1) levels of reality and types of vision, 2. knowledge(scientia) and wisdom(sapientia), My second task is to analyse Augustinus' notions of learning and teaching: 1) motivation of learning, 2) two levels of learning and teaching. My third goal is to critically examine his notions of learning and teaching.
