It is possible that Forūgh Farrokhzād is the first remarkable poetess in Persian literature. Few poetesses prior to her wrote Persian poems. She lived in the transition period from what is considered traditional literature to the modern literature period. In Persian traditional literature, individualized reflections of men barely exist in women’s writings. The men are captives of a cultural canon of masculine images and stereotypes. Farrokhzād strips away this veil of mystery and presents them in their all-too-human frailties, contradictions, and strengths. She shows them warts and all. Forūgh Farrokhzād's poetry portrays candidly women's emotional responses to men. For many of her readers, her self-described “fearlessness” in expressing her yearnings and desires signals the arrival of a new woman, who boldly follows the dictates of her heart, casting aside traditional norms if they stifl her individuality. Marked by unprecedented “emotional honesty” and “brutal sincerity”, Farrokhzād's verses caused a stir in a culture that traditionally censors the realm of the intimate from the public gaze. Farrokhzād's self-reflective poetry has become emblematic of a new tradition of women's writings: a tradition of women who “not only reveal themselves, but unveil men” in their works. Undoubtedly, Forūḡ Farrokhzād is among the most gifted women of 20th-century Persia.
