An Analysis of Multicultural Education For Children of Migrant Workers

본 연구의 목적은 소수자, 특히 이주노동자 자녀를 대상으로 하여 수행되는 다문화교육의 사례들을 통해 그 실행 양상을 탐구하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 한국 학생과 더불어 이주노동자 자녀들을 가르치며 다문화교육을 실행하고 있는 세 초등학교의 여섯 교사들과의 심층면접을 통해서, 그들이 다문화교육을 수행하면서 겪게 되는 경험과 인식을 분석하였다. 본 연구는 질적 연구로서, 본 연구 분석 결과 이주노동자 자녀를 대상으로 하는 다문화교육의 실행 양상이 다섯 가지 핵심 범주로 도출되었는데, 교육기회의 제공, 적응과 동화교육, 한국전통문화에 초점을 둔 문화교육, 분리교육 형태의 운영, 국익을 위한 장기적 투자로 보는 양상이 나타났다. 다문화교육은 그 대상 및 맥락에 따라 다양한 양상으로 실행될 수 있는데, 본 연구는 그 중 이주노동자 자녀를 대상으로 하는 다문화교육의 맥락적 이해를 제공하였다는 데에 의의를 지닌다. 또한 본 연구는 상황 적합한 지식과 경험의 부족으로 다문화교육을 수행하는 데에 어려움을 겪고 있는 교사들에게 유용한 정보를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.

The purpose of this study was to explore how multicultural education for minority students, especially children of migrant workers, was implemented in Korean elementary schools. For this purpose, I conducted a qualitative case study to investigate the experiences and perspectives of six teachers from three elementary schools who were implementing multicultural education and interacting with children of foreign workers by using in-depth individual interviews. The result shows that multicultural education for children of migrant workers has the following five patterns: ensuring educational opportunity for minority groups, focusing on adaptation and assimilation, focusing on Korean traditional culture, segregating children of migrant workers from Korean students, and understanding multicultural education as long-term investments for the nation's benefits. This study shows multicultural education practices are differently implemented according to the situated multicultural conditions, and provides contextualized understandings of multicultural education for children of migrant workers. This study also provides an useful information to teachers who are practicing multicultural education but experiencing difficulties due to a lack of situated knowledge and experiences.
