문제해결관점을 기반으로 한 R&D 협력 유형의 분류 및 함의

Categorization of R&D Collaboration Based on Problem-Solving Perspective and its Implication

기업들의 R&D 협력 연구는 공동으로 문제를 해결하기 위한 협동적 문제해결과정(collaborative problem solving process)이다. 개방형 혁신의 흐름에 따라 협력 연구는 R&D를 수행함에 있어 필수적인 활동으로 활발히 추진되고 있다. R&D를 수행함에 있어 발생하는 기술적 문제들을 기업 내부에서 자체적으로 해결하기도 하지만 외부의 다른 기업과 협력을 통해 해결하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Nickerson과 Zenger(2004)가 제시한 문제해결관점(problem-solving perspective)을 기반으로 기업들의 R&D 협력 추진과정을 공동의 문제해결과정(joint problem-solving)으로 이해하고 문제해결의 주체, 장소, 방법에 따라 R&D 협력 유형을 분류하는 이론적 프레임워크를 제시하고자 한다. 문제를 발견하여 정의하고 이에 대한 해결책을 탐색ㆍ개발하여 다시 기업 내부에서 활용하는 과정에 따라 5개 유형으로 구분한다. R&D 협력 유형별 각 사례를 제시하고 특징, 장ㆍ단점, 성공적인 R&D 협력 추진을 위해 필요한 기업의 역량, 고려사항을 제시한다. 본 연구에서 제시하는 바와 같이 문제해결관점을 기반으로 R&D 협력 유형을 구분하는 것은 기업 입장에서 문제해결을 위한 방법을 탐색하고 해결해나가는 과정이 기업 역량으로 연결되어 궁극적으로 기업의 가치 창출 기반이 될 수 있는 전략적 측면에서 의의를 제공한다.

Firm's R&D collaboration can be described as the collaborative problem solving process to solve problems jointly. As one of the most traditional manifestations of open innovation, collaborative research plays an indispensable role for firm’s R&D activities. Collaborative R&D enables firms to figure out the solutions in cooperation with other capable firms, and to figure out the solutions that are not achievable on their own. The goal of this paper is to understand the R&D collaboration process among firms using the problem-solving perspective initially suggested by Nickerson and Zenger(2004). Using this perspective, we suggest a theological framework which categorizes R&D collaboration types by subjects, locations, and solution modes of problem solving. We identified five different types of collaboration process, using the problem-solving process that consists of five different problem-solving steps: problem detection, problem definition, solution search, solution development, solution reinterpretation and internalization. Joint problem-solving process described in this paper will provide significant strategic implications for firms since this process, if successfully developed into firm’s core competency, will give firms opportunities to create values in a very innovative way.
