Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore and analyze the role and the importance of information technology on distribution. The article examines Federal Express (FedEx) and its utilization of information technology to determine how a small delivery service became a true global distribution company within a short period of time and what role information technology played in contributing to their success. Research design – This research is designed to conduct an explanatory analysis of a specific company, and the nature of the case study is retrospective, in that, the analysis is strictly based on historical events and records of FedEx. Results – The research findings suggest that continuousdevelopment and application of information technology was the major success factor of FedEx. Conclusions – Based on the analysis of FedEx, distribution companies that do not recognize the significant role of information technology would not survive in their industry. The role of information technology in distribution will continue tobe the factor in success or failure of the companies.
