The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of self-esteem, parenting attitude, and social support on adolescents' coping strategies. The subjects of the study were 545 middle- and high school-aged adolescents in Cheongju and Goesan areas. The main findings were as follows: First, the results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that school level, self-esteem, democratic parenting attitude, and school support were statistically significant in explaining positive coping strategies. Self-esteem and school support have the greatest effect. Second, within-the-family coping strategies were influenced by democratic parenting attitude, school support. Democratic parenting attitude has the most significant effect. Third, self-esteem, school support, and community support were found to be the variables that explained outside-the-family coping strategies. Community support has the biggest effect. The results of this study indicate that there is an urgent need to establish a supportive system which helps school-aged adolescents' better adjustment and positive coping. In particular, by reflecting their cultural context in which face-to-face interaction is lacking, it is necessary to provide a proper space for personal interactions and communication with school human resources. As social support turned out important in adolescents' coping, we need to build up a safety net to supplement insufficient family resources through school and community, such as programs that strengthen the role of religious institutions as well as social welfare organizations and counseling agencies.
