The Space Planning Characteristics in Small Apartment Housing Works for Young One-person Households

The purpose of this study was to analyze the space planning characteristics in small apartment housing works targeting young one-person households in order to suggest future direction of housing unit design for the population. A document research method was used to explore the characteristics and housing types of young one-person household. Case studies were used to analyze and classified the spatial characteristics of units and shared space in 9 small apartment housing works by architectural magazines. Findings of this study were as follows: (1) There were two aspects in unit planning characteristics: ‘the spatial planning reflecting essential living activities' and ‘the free plan configuration'; (2) planning characteristics of the shared space were classified as ‘the complexation of public functions through the control of private function' and ‘flexibility for public functions'.
