A Study of the Current Status of Beauty Care Programs in Welfare Facilities for the Elderly - Focusing on elderly care facilities in Busan -

Recently, life expectancy in Korea has increased along with economic growth. As the demand for a better life increases rather than just making ends meet, people have become more interested in new employment, continuing education and high-quality leisure life as well as in economy and leisure activities. As we get older, however, it is very hard to avoid senile diseases along with economic difficulties. The healthy aged may have a chance totravel around or further their education and get a new job. If they are sick, however, they will not be given these opportunities. Thanks to the long-termcare insurance system which was launched in 2008, the aged have been able toget the care they’ve needed at a welfare facility for the elderly, community facility, or at home. People want to spend a peaceful and beautiful life in the later chapters of their lives. However, a beauty care program has not been familiar to the aged who have received medical care anduse elderly care facilities. In fact, volunteer services have been given by mostly volunteer hair dressers. As a result, it hasn’t been common for the aged to participate in the program and benefit from the therapeutic welfare program. In reality, it is necessary to perform more specified demonstration studies to promote the beauty welfare psycho-therapy program for the aged.
