Effect of Social Media Characteristics on Perceived Usefulness of Mobile English Learning and Learning Performance

Environmental aspects of English learning are a crucial factor for increasing learners' positive attitude and performance. Mobile learning for English has been a hot issue for many educators. However, a few studies attempt to empirically examine the impact of social media on English learners' perception on usefulness and performance. Thus, this study develops the research model investigating the impact of social media on English learners' perceived usefulness, which then affects English learning performance in the context of mobile learning. Five constructs including participation, openness, interaction, community, and connectedness are proposed in social media. Results showed that all constructs with exception of participation have a significant effect on perceived usefulness. Furthermore, perceived usefulness has positive impact on English learning performance. A discussion of the research findings and implications for practitioners and researchers is included.
